Qimen Dunjia Calculator: How to Cast a Chart Online

Casting a Qimen Dunjia chart takes fifteen seconds. Understanding what the tool just did for you takes a little longer — this guide covers both.

What you need to cast a chart

Just one thing: a moment in time. Qimen Dunjia is a time-based system — the chart describes the configuration of a specific hour, not of a person's lifetime. You do not need a birth date, a name or any personal details.

In practice you use the moment the question formed in your mind (often the moment you decided to ask). There is no need to wait for an auspicious hour or to hand-pick a time.

How the chart is generated

Every calculator walks the same road. Knowing the steps makes the output verifiable instead of mysterious:

  1. Solar term (節氣) and the three yuans (三元). The year is divided into 24 solar terms; each term is split into three periods of roughly five days. This places the hour inside a specific segment.
  2. Ju number (局數) and dun type. Each segment maps to one of nine ju numbers, either Yang Dun (陽遁, used from the winter solstice onward) or Yin Dun (陰遁, after the summer solstice).
  3. The Earth Plate (地盤). Nine symbols are laid into the nine palaces, starting from the palace matching the ju number, in the fixed order Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Ding, Bing, Yi — forward for Yang Dun, backward for Yin Dun.
  4. The Heaven Plate (天盤). The nine stars, eight gates and eight spirits rotate so that the Chief Star (值符) sits on the palace holding its emblem.
  5. Extras. Void (空亡) and Horse (驛馬) markers, plus the day and hour pillars.

What a good chart shows

  • Nine palaces with compass directions, each holding a star, a gate, a spirit, and a heaven-plate stem over an earth-plate stem.
  • Eight gates (八門) — the "human" layer: how the action unfolds.
  • Nine stars (九星) — the "heaven" layer: the nature of the situation.
  • Eight spirits (八神) — hidden support or obstruction.
  • Void (空亡) and Horse (馬星) — whether matters are solid or hollow, still or moving.
  • Solar term, yuan, ju number and dun type — so you can cross-check the chart against any other calculator.

A tool that prints a single "lucky / unlucky" verdict without showing this raw data is fine for entertainment, but you cannot learn from it or verify it.

Reading your first chart

  1. Decide the question and the roles in it (you, the other party, the matter).
  2. Identify the main significator for each role — the day stem usually stands for the asker, the hour stem for the matter or the other side.
  3. Find those palaces on the chart, and note the gate, star and spirit inside each.
  4. Compare the five-element relationship between the two palaces: does one generate or control the other?
  5. Check whether either palace is void or carries the Horse, which tells you whether the matter is concrete or still moving.

That sequence gets you a defensible first reading in a few minutes. Everything beyond it — the naming of patterns, the finer star correspondences — is refinement, not a prerequisite.

Common mistakes

  • Treating it like a horoscope. One hour, one question. If you ask about career, love and money at once, the tool has no single focus.
  • Asking the same question repeatedly until an answer feels comfortable. That is not divination; it is reassurance-seeking.
  • Skipping the time frame. "Will it happen?" never expires. "Will it happen within two months?" can actually be checked later.
  • Reading the verdict instead of the chart. The value is in the layers — which gate, which palace, which blockage — not in a yes or no.

The chart shows the shape of the moment: which direction is supported, which has friction, and how the matter is likely to move. The decision stays yours.

FAQ

Do I need my birth date for a Qimen Dunjia chart?
No. A Qimen chart is cast from the moment of the question — year, month, day and hour of that specific time. Birth data belongs to other systems such as BaZi. Some practitioners additionally look at the year pillar of birth, but it is not required to cast or read a chart.
Is the online calculator accurate?
You can verify it. Two checks work for any chart: the Earth Plate must contain each of the nine symbols (Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui, Ding, Bing, Yi) exactly once, and the chart should state its solar term, yuan, ju number and dun type. If those are present and consistent, the tool is doing the standard calculation.
How long does it take to learn to read one?
Most people can produce a basic reading — locate the significators, compare the palaces, check void and horse — after a few hours of study and a dozen practice charts. Reading fluently, with pattern names and star correspondences, takes considerably longer.
